I love a good finisher at the end of a workout. In fact I don’t think a workout is a proper workout without some kind of finisher at the end.
We recently looked at AMRAP workouts (As Many Reps As Possible) which can be a great way to finish a session. We have also discussed a few times the use of TABATA’s at the end of a session.
This new style I call a Countdown Finisher. You could utilise the set-up at any point in a workout but I like it stuck at the end because it is intensive and really ensures you get your heart rate up and makes you work at your maximum if done right.
Basically you pick a number of exercises. I would say 2-4 maximum. I would also try and keep the exercises to the same body part or full body moves. This is so we are really going to feel the burn…!!
Then we do each exercises 10 times, then 9, then 8, then 7 and so on until we get sown to 1.
You could technically start at any number but go any higher than about 14 and you start to have quite a long intensive round. I like this round to be short and sharp so you can really put everything you have left into it.
As an example a Countdown Finisher I recently did involved 3 Exercises. This was after a hard session also.
This finisher consisted of;
- Predator Jacks
- Air Squats
- Jump Squats
As you can see all 3 require the legs to work hard. Going from Predator Jacks to Air squats is just about manageable but then throw in the Jump Squats and things get serious….the burn kicks in and you have two dig deep.
The beauty is that you can see the Finish Line….it is a mere few minutes away so you push through and get it done.
